The Recruiting Sergeant is an award winning pub, restaurant and B&B located in the village of Horstead, near Coltishall.

The pub is well known for its high food quality, friendliness of the staff and the attention to detail thanks to Matthew and Nicola Colchester and their dedicated team.

Food & Drink

Our award-winning food is prepared from quality produce, sourced locally whenever possible and used in season to get the best results.

Our menus feature a variety of dishes showcasing the adventurous use of fresh ingredients by our team of chefs led by Matthew Colchester. Fresh fish and seafood is a speciality. Classic British pub food also features and on Sundays traditional roast lunches from £10.95 are a popular choice.

Some of our ales from the bar include Adnams, Woodfordes and Greene King. A large range of carefully selected wines are served by the glass, or treat yourself to a cocktail from our blackboard list.

We also have a Children's Menu. We are enthusiastic about encouraging children to experience a wide range of tastes and flavours so offer smaller versions of some adult dishes as well as classic kids' favourites.

Special diets - because our food is freshly cooked we can modify many menu items to cater for those on special diets such as gluten free.
