Welcome to The Whalebone Freehouse, built circa 1830 and something of a hidden gem. Independent and privately owned, we are situated just a couple of miles north of Norwich city centre in the 'Platinum Triangle'
We offer a popular hybrid that blends a traditional pub with a modern wine bar priding ourselves on offering a warm welcome to everyone. We even offer free dog biscuits to those arriving with their four-legged best friends!
We have a fabulous selection of drinks to choose from, including Lagers, Ciders and eight Cask Ales from Regional and Local Breweries. Quality is assured with annual Cask Marque accreditation and acknowledged by our inclusion in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.
A lovely range of wine, supplied by Adnams of Southwold, is available from our cellars by the glass or by the bottle and the usual array of hot and cold drinks that you would expect in a pub, including an extensive selection of Gins and Rums, mean that you can be sure to find the right drink for you.
When you arrive you may notice that our pub seems quite small but don't let that fool you, inside it is like the Tardis. You have the choice of the traditionally furnished front bar, the relaxing lounge area, our modern conservatory and one of our latest additions, the retro Malthouse room.
Our Malthouse room is a bright, spacious and versatile area that is available to hire for all kinds of social and business functions, offering all of the facilities required to create the perfect atmosphere for your event.
Outside our terrace area caters for smokers, and also accommodates those who wish to enjoy the Cafe Culture experience at the Whalebone.
The area seats comfortably up to 60 people, is fully enclosed and has a display of plants and hanging baskets creating a Mediterranean ambience just outside of the City centre.
The terrace is covered by two large umbrellas, which are fitted with heaters to take the chill off the evening air and is the perfect place to relax. We offer table service to make your experience even more pleasurable.
Sports enthusiasts are well catered for with most major events televised on big screens via Sky and BT Sports channels. For trivia buffs we hold a monthly Quiz night in the Malthouse room, please check our website for full details.
If you find yourself a bit peckish, we have wonderful, locally produced Pork Pies, Sausage Rolls and Scotch eggs which are available at all times. Our barbecue is not to be missed it runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from March to October.
We open daily at noon, closing at 11.00pm Sunday to Thursday, while on Fridays and Saturdays we ‘re open until midnight.
Always popular with customers is our Happy Hour, which runs Monday to Friday from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, with ales and lagers available at reduced prices.
Whether you're a regular visitor to Norwich or are just in the city and need to quench a thirst, General Manager Steve Fiske and his team look forward to greeting you in the near future.
